The dictionary defines a mentor as an experienced and trusted advisor. There are many students in Union County Schools who could benefit from having this kind of person in their life. A mentor is simply a volunteer who can be a supportive friend with a listening ear. They may spend 45 minutes to an hour each week reading, playing games, or simply talking with children. Children who have mentors have been found to be less likely to use drugs and alcohol. They also typically have better attendance, often improve their grades, and have more self-confidence.

In our program now, we have around 30 students working with mentors but we have many more referrals to the program. Students in all schools can participate in the program. We currently have a waiting list of students who have been recommended but we do not have a trained adult to match them with. We strongly encourage each person to consider working with a student to give them a consistent, stable adult that they can depend on. Children might be referred to the program due to family concerns, peer relationships, lack of commitment to school or poor self-esteem. We especially have aneed for male mentors who can help influence children who need a male rolemodel. We would like to have a mentor for every child that is in need of one.
